Best honey from Portugal in 2020
Once again, Mel de Barroso DOP, from the Producers' Group of the Cooperativa Agrícola de Boticas, was awarded the Gold Medal in the Heather Honeys category and also as Honey of the Year, obtaining the highest score among all national honeys on the continent and the islands.
This honey, produced in a territory classified by FAO as World Agricultural Heritage, won, for the third time in seven years, the title of Honey of the Year and the Gold Medal in the category of Heather Honey.
The “Mel de Barroso” - DOP is produced by the bee Apis mellifera iberiensis (sp. Ibérica), in the regions with the highest quota in Barroso. Its particular characteristics result from an extraordinary vegetal layer, composed mainly of heather (Erica sp.), Which besides providing a good development of the colonies of the bees, originate the manufacture of a much appreciated dark honey.
Why is this honey amazing? It has numerous uses, namely in regional cuisine and therapeutic action, since it contains a multitude of beneficial substances for the human body (antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids, proteins, ...), revealing it a great natural source of health.
